Nearly 19,000 People Receive Improved Provision of Ecosystem Services in Costa Rica’s Urban Areas
Two projects are examples of how specific interventions can have major impacts.

Almost 19,000 people in urban areas are benefiting from these ecosystem services (ES) thanks to the implementation of two of four projects of the "Green and Biodiverse Urban Recovery" fund (FRUV, for its acronym in Spanish), a non-refundable fund of up to € 110,000 provided by the German Development Cooperation GIZ on behalf of the IKI and administered and implemented through Fundecooperación para el Desarrollo Sostenible. The beneficiaries contributed at least 30% in matching funds to these investments.
Through the FRUV, the "San José Verde" project was initiated between the Municipality of San José and the Professional Association of Architects of Costa Rica, to transform the municipality of San José, capital of Costa Rica, into a green city through the planting of native trees, hand in hand with urban art through the creation of murals. It was possible to improve the ES, such as having areas with more shade, reducing heat islands, purifying the air and increasing biodiversity in urban spaces.
Another project contributed to urban green recovery by improving the “Bosque de las Américas” managed by IICA-CATIE through the planting of trees, crops and plants native to the implementation area, while also recovering traditional and cultural knowledge. The project was implemented to improve the ES in urban areas, create spaces for coexistence, and preserve biodiversity and water resources, among other things.
“ The director of the Biodiver_City project for GIZ, Claus Kruse, pointed out that "the non-refundable funds become a seed capital that allows the promotion of green projects in the cities and the engagement of organizations and local governments that can scale up the projects". ”
