The Global Project Mainstreaming EbA has published its popular report ‘Toward gender-responsive Ecosystem-based Adaptation – why it’s needed and how to get there’ in Spanish. The publication, which was written by Angie Dazé and Anika Terton from the International Institute for Sustainable Development, was launched in English in summer 2021 and is now available in English and Spanish on www.adaptationcommunity.net.
The impacts of climate change affect people differently, depending on their gender, as well as a range of other factors, including age, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and disability. For EbA to be effective, it must take these differences into account, while also addressing the systemic barriers and discrimination that make some people more vulnerable than others.
The report illustrates the importance of integrating gender considerations in EbA actions and provides concrete guidance and examples of how this can be done in practice. It furthermore contains two case studies from Latin America: An example from Honduras explains how a project’s monitoring and reporting system focused on climate-resilient food security helped to identify gender-blind activities and to make necessary adjustments. An example from Ecuador describes the participatory design of EbA actions, with active engagement of women.
