Joining Forces for Biodiversity: BioFinCas Annual Meeting Advances the Future of Sustainable Agriculture

In Mexico, actors from the financial sector, environmental organizations, and development experts gathered at the BioFinCas annual meeting to discuss how to reconcile agricultural production with biodiversity protection. Amid the exchange of ideas, new partnerships, and a focus on Chiapas’s coffee sector, the event reaffirmed that collaboration is key to building resilient and sustainable agricultural systems.

The annual meeting is always one of the project’s most important moments of the year, as there are few opportunities to present in depth the milestones achieved, discuss results, and, on that basis, adjust strategies in order to move forward together toward more biodiversity-friendly agriculture.

This year, the BioFinCas annual meeting was held in Mexico and began with the prominent networking event “CONNECT and SHARE.” The BioFinCas consortium, together with participants from the financial sector, international cooperation, environmental organizations, and governmental and supranational entities, came together for a breakfast exchange and dialogue.

Following the welcome, an introduction was presented on biodiversity in Mexico and the threats it currently faces. Given that a large part of Mexican territory is devoted to agriculture, a sector that has a decisive influence on biodiversity, a central question was raised: How can agricultural production, nature conservation, and biodiversity be reconciled?

The BioFinCas project and its implementation in Mexico were then presented, with a special focus on the pilot model centered on the coffee sector in the state of Chiapas.

During the discussion, participants agreed that biodiversity is a fundamental condition for securing the agriculture of the future. Ensuring sustainable agricultural systems for future generations requires close collaboration among local producers, organizations, financial institutions, and other key actors.

The meeting concluded with an open exchange among thematic posters and over breakfast, strengthening existing relationships and encouraging new contacts to promote future cooperation and sustainable agriculture.
