International call: Costa Rica seeks innovative solutions to manage biodiversity climate refuges
Scientific research and climate change scenarios predict that, by 2050, temperatures will rise and rainfall will vary in various parts of the world, forcing species to adapt to the climate.

GIZ Costa Rica together with the National System of Conservation Areas (SINAC) and the National Meteorological Institute (IMN) of the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MINAE), launch the Innovación Abierta call for international participation of technical organizations that propose innovative solutions for the management of climate refuges for biodiversity.
Climatic refuges are areas identified by SINAC, where climatic variations could be slower, and which represent an opportunity for species to carry out their processes of adjustment to new habitats .
Innovación Abierta as a way to achieve climate targets
The program was born as an initiative of the Innovation, Climate and Biodiversity Hub of the GIZ ACCIÓN Clima project, in its mission to accompany public institutions in the search for innovative solutions to achieve the targets set out in its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), the commitment in terms of climate action that the country assumed before the international community in the framework of the Paris Agreement.
That is why, through its virtual launch on October 6, an invitation was extended to academia, technology companies, NGOs, start-ups and research centers to participate in this program.
Open call
Interested national and international organizations can register their proposals at www.iki-cac.org/en/innovacion-abierta-biodiversidad-y-cambio-climatico from now and until November 15, 2023, according to the extended date.
The benefits of participating
Three teams will be selected to participate in an immersive innovation workshop and a technical tour in Costa Rica, and there will be the possibility of supporting the preparation of solution proposals for a maximum amount of USD 6,000. In addition, during the process, they will receive 1:1 mentoring and coaching in innovation.
Once the innovative proposals have been devised, they will be followed up to assess their possibilities for implementation.
