The communities of Quiché and Chimaltenango in Guatemala have already prioritised sites to implement Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) measures and have strengthened their knowledge don't he use of nature for climate risk management through workshops in the framework of the EbA LAC project.
The activities conducted sought to analyze, from the perspective of the land user, knowledge about the provision of ecosystem services in countries of implementation of the EbA LAC project, as well as explore the climate crisis and identify potential EbA measures and practices to address climate risks.
More than 115 women participated in this process, who were able to learn the results of the risk analysis and identification of the main threats to livelihoods. In addition, participants selected EbA measures to address climate-related risks through biodiversity management and agreed on criteria, mechanisms, and processes for the identification of the proposed measures.
As next steps, the project will develop a strategy for implementing EbA measures in the prioritized areas and integrating this adaptation approach into municipal strategies and plans in the face of the climate change crisis. EbA LAC is implemented by the German Development Cooperation GIZ - as lead agency - in partnership with IUCN and CATIE in Ecuador, Guatemala, and Costa Rica. In Guatemala, it is implemented in coordination with the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN).
