Oreamuno is a beautiful municipality in Costa Rica’s Cartago province that, due to its natural conditions, is home to lands that are important for the country's agricultural production. However, precisely because of these characteristics, the rainy season has a high risk of flooding these and other areas

Aware of the situation and urgently looking to solve the problem, the municipality developed alliances with owners of local agricultural farms aiming to design nature-based adaptation solutions by digging a lagoon and caissons in the highly permeable soil, in order to mitigate the phenomenon of surface runoff.

This was part of the workshop held by the ACCIÓN Clima project and the local government that joined the call to implement climate change adaptation plans in the Costa Rica’s municipalities.

As part of the event, 11 municipalities participated in a field trip to observe first-hand the solutions that can be replicated in different areas.

The participation of the municipalities allowed them to learn about the main challenges they face as a result of climate variability, for example, the low level of interest of the communities to participate in these initiatives and the lack of environmental policies.

As a result, participants determined the need to generate information campaigns to raise awareness and increase environmental education as a way of approaching the inhabitants and sharing with them in detail the collective benefits of implementing actions at the local level.

The GIZ-led project will continue to provide technical support and facilitate spaces for the exchange of experiences to generate joint responses.
