Guatemalan Students Learn About the Importance of Solid Waste and Biodiversity

Two workshops raised awareness about the importance of solid waste and biodiversity with the schools of Candelaria and El Banco, located in the municipality of Taxisco, department of Santa Rosa in Guatemala.

In both workshops, experts spoke on the importance and the correct way to dispose of garbage, as well as to learn about the biodiversity that surrounds them on the Guatemalan coast and the importance of conserving it.

A game was also played with the students so that they could put into practice everything they had learned. It consisted of dividing the students into two groups: The first group would represent the threats (pollution, hunting, illegal trafficking of species, and logging); while the second group would represent the animals.

Each child was given a threat or animal badge, corresponding to the character they would represent in the game. Then, the threats and animals would face each other in a race from a starting point (A) to a finishing point (B). The first boy or girl to reach point B (threat or animal) would win the race and survive.

The objective of the dynamic was to explain to the children that the more threats the animals have around them, the more difficult it will be for them to survive, but that we can make a significant change by reducing threats, not littering, not cutting down trees, among others. This way we will be able to conserve the biodiversity of our country.
