Save The Blue 5 says “Yes!” to change at High-Level Event on Ocean Action

The ocean plays an important role on our planet as a carbon dioxide sink and oxygen emitter. However, climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution are the three major threats that contribute to its deterioration. Globally, collective efforts have been made to mitigate the impacts of the environmental crisis within the framework of the 2030 Agenda, and the United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC) is a great example of this.  

The government of Costa Rica organized the High-Level Event on Ocean Action: Immersed in Change, in which best practices and successful experiences related to the well-being of oceans were exchanged. The regional marine project Save the Blue Five participated between June 7 and 8 as part of the booths of initiatives that promote the sustainable use of marine resources.  

The actions coordinated by the project, such as regional political dialogue, coordinated monitoring of marine biodiversity, financing mechanisms and capacity development as well as awareness-raising drew the attention of civil society, scientific community, private sector, as well as relevant leaders and government authorities, such as the Costa Rican Minister of Foreign Relations, Arnoldo André Tinoco.

Thanks to these priorities, during the event, the project promoted the approach between the East Tropical Pacific Marine Corridor (CMAR) initiative and the Permanent Commission of the South Pacific (CPPS) as a first step towards a Memorandum of Understanding between both institutions.  

With a strong commitment to our oceans, the participation in this event has demonstrated the transformational power of global collaboration and the relevance of the work that the German Development Cooperation GIZ, through the project implementing consortium, carries out in favor of the 2030 Agenda and the fulfillment of the Sustainable Development Goals.
