Cool Training in Grenada: Applying Natural Refrigerant Technology

Practical training on the application of Natural Refrigerant Technology (Propane, R290) for Refrigeration and air conditioning technicians and trainers from 21 to 25 August 2023 organized by the National Ozone Unit (NOU) in Grenada and supported by the Cool Contributions fighting Climate Change II project.

The global project Cool Contributions fighting Climate Change II (C4 II) aims to promote a sustainable transformation of the refrigeration and air conditioning sector. To advance this goal, it is vital to improve technical capabilities of refrigeration and air conditioning technicians and trainers in the safe use of natural refrigerants and to facilitate the exchange of experience and expertise at the regional level.

In this context, a training workshop was organized on the application of the natural refrigerant propane. The training workshop used a train-the-trainers approach for sixteen experienced trainers from Grenada and one from Dominica and placed special emphasis on practical demonstrations in the safe use of propane.

The components of the training included; Natural refrigerants (properties, applications, safety), brazing (theory and practical), refrigerant recovery and recycling, evacuation and charging of refrigerants, installation methods (theory and practice), servicing and maintenance practices, leakage search and tightness testing (theory and practice).

The training was conducted by a professor of the German vocational training institute Bundesfachschule Kälte-Klima-Technik (BFS) along with a national trainer selected by the NOU Grenada.
