Mangroves in the Central American and Caribbean region are ecosystems of high biodiversity, productivity and importance for the local economy and adaptation to climate change, which is why they are of particular importance for the global agenda within the framework of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. In order to promote the restoration of the mangrove ecosystem in a coordinated manner, technical and community teams from the Dominican Republic, Panama, Guatemala and El Salvador participated in the "Regional Technical-Community Exchange: Mangroves Without Borders" held from February 1 to 2, 2023 in El Salvador.

Representatives of the partner organizations of the "Green Development Fund for the SICA region", "Regional Coastal Biodiversity Project" and the Environmental Investment Fund of El Salvador exchanged their restoration experiences during the workshop, and identified replicable and sustainable actions for mangrove restoration in the region.

Among the topics discussed were "Institutional strategies for governance in mangrove protection, conservation and restoration", with officials from the region's natural resource management institutions being the main speakers, as well as "Regional advancements and experiences in Blue Carbon for sustainability", and "Learning experiences in local communities for mangrove restoration".
