In the cocoa, coffee and banana sectors, the journey from farm to table is often fraught with challenges, especially for small-scale producers. They are increasingly exposed to the consequences of climate change. This is why OroVerde's new project, called BioFinCas, aims to achieve a fairer balance between risking and benefiting.

At the official project launch in March in Guatemala, Elena Brandes from the International Climate Initiative, which is funding the project, spoke with Ulrich Malessa, Torsten Klimpel (both OroVerde) and the representatives of the BioFinCas consortium about the goals and challenges.

Ten international partner organizations are developing innovative solutions and transformation models in the areas of finance, politics, trade and agriculture. At the same time, BioFinCas focuses on all actors along the value chain: Producers and agricultural cooperatives in the regions of the project in the Dominican Republic, Guatemala and Mexico, intermediaries and wholesalers, processing companies and consumers in Germany and Europe.

The overarching goal is a fundamental change in conditions - towards biodiversity-friendly, climate-resilient cultivation methods and away from an unfair distribution of the burden. Among other things, easily accessible risk financing solutions should provide better protection for small-scale producers in the future.
