In Costa Rica, the number of electric vehicles entering the country has been increasing rapidly, but mainly in the form of cars with less than 8 passengers. Electric minibuses, vans and buses are practically non-existent on the country's roads.
The components of Costa Rica's tourism model and its competitiveness strategy as an international destination are sustainability, innovation and inclusion. It seems natural, therefore, that a country focused on conservation and sustainable development should also venture into electric mobility in the tourism subsector as part of its identity and international positioning.
That is why the MINAE, through the Directorate of Energy and with the support of the German Development Cooperation (GIZ), decided to develop a roadmap to create the conditions for a gradual transition from conventional to electric technology in the vehicle fleet of the country's tourism sector.
