Regional Climate Innovation Hub
Energy
The energy sector is the main contributor to climate change, with around 60% of all global greenhouse gas emissions. The decarbonization of the economy is included in the climate goals presented by the countries of the region before the Paris Agreement, and the transition to renewable sources is key to achieving these goals.
Costa Rica is positioned as a regional leader in energy matters by having a matrix that comes from 99% of energy from renewable sources such as water, geothermal energy, wind, biomass and sun. In recent years, countries in the region have been imitating the Costa Rican model and diversifying their energy matrix. Not only are there efforts in terms of mass energy production, the country also has specific solutions in terms of energy that can be very useful for other countries in this energy transition.
