Visions for a better life in low-carbon societies
Learning by Doing project seeks to generate visions of good climate and living policies as a guide to help drive sustainable development in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The Learning by Doing (LBD) project, with financial support from the International Climate Initiative IKI, seeks to develop viable visions of living in attractive societies which are compatible with a temperature increase limit of 2 to 1.5 °C, in specific locations. The goal is to use these visions as a guide to facilitate the combination of scenario development with climate and economic models. This is developed with the aim of valuing learning and the discovery of new approaches, while engaging in collaboratively focused research. The project aims to facilitate changes of behavior and mindset in different countries such as South Africa, Lebanon, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic; the latter two are part of the Latin American and Caribbean region. The idea is to see things in a different way and act accordingly.
The seminar was attended by around 40 professionals and aimed to discuss and learn about visions, strategies and economic instruments and regulations that combine the pursuit of a good life with a contribution towards low-carbon and resilient societies. A key question was whether visions of good climate and life policies can serve as a guide to help drive sustainable development, and what combinations of these policies are compatible with the visions of a good life. This approach also sparked a discussion on how this transition to a 2050 future can be imagined in a society compatible with these goals.
This seminar was organized by ECLAC and Energeia, in coordination with the Spanish Climate Change Office, and was carried out as one of the activities implemented in the framework of the Learning by Doing Project, supported by the Economic Commission for Latin America (ECLAC), and the Network of Ibero-American Climate Change Offices (RIOCC). The seminar was delivered in a hybrid format, with in-person and online participation.
