Poli-LAC: Second regional workshop will determine the next steps in the implementation of the project in Latin America

Implementing partners and political counterparts from five countries will meet to build a joint vision for project implementation, identification of best practices, and participatory and scientific monitoring for the conservation of pollinating insects and their ecosystem services in Latin America.

The regional initiative, Poli-LAC, will bring together for the second time, in Costa Rica, implementers and political counterparts from Brazil, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru and Costa Rica, aiming to create a joint vision in the implementation of the project while creating spaces for coordination in planning.

To optimize these processes, encourage reflections and innovative and strategic work proposals, the session will be held between March 18 and 21 and will be divided into two spaces. One of them will be oriented to training by experts on topics such as friendly practices and monitoring, as well as the visibility of the progress made by each country and of the regional team.

Another, aimed at recognizing the landscape in which the project is implemented in Costa Rica, will be a field visit of the Nicoya Peninsula, in Guanacaste. During this visit, attendees will visit protected wildlife areas, biological corridors and productive landscapes linked to the protection of pollinating insects.

The project has generated exchanges among the countries since June 2024, when the first regional workshop was held in Oxapampa, Peru, with the participation of delegations from the five countries. During this workshop, the main objectives, indicators, components and actions of the project were discussed and analyzed, so that the member countries could begin planning with counterparts, implementing partners and other allies.

In addition, during the second half of 2024, their countries developed the strategic planning of these components, management structures were formed and alliances with the different implementing partners were consolidated by country.

At the same time, in some countries, the project held the first workshops for the mapping of actors and criteria for the selection of sites for implementation and best practices, processes that are still open and are being worked on in an ongoing, multisectoral and interdisciplinary manner.

The project is commissioned by the German Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) as part of the International Climate Initiative (IKI). The Poli-LAC project runs from June 2024 to December 2028.
