A new vision for Energy Efficiency in Buildings in Costa Rica
Country commits to development of a National Strategy for Energy Efficiency

@GIZ/PEEB
A workshop organized by the Partnership for Energy Efficiency in Buildings (PEEB) brought stakeholders together to discuss the challenges and solutions to an energy efficiency transformation in the Costa Rican building sector in January 21 and 23. As a result, the Ministry of Environment and Energy (Ministerio de Ambiente y Energía (MINAE), decided to lead a committee with participants from different sectors to develop the National Strategy for Energy Efficiency. A workplan for the building sector is expected by the end of 2025.
Energy Efficiency is essential for Costa Rica to achieve its ambitious climate targets: the country has pledged to decarbonize the energy sector and increase resilience to climate change risks. With the support of PEEB Cool, the new strategy will identify and address barriers to large-scale deployment of energy efficiency in the country.
Sustainable building design, construction and operation
The Partnership for Energy Efficiency in Buildings (PEEB) works to transform the global building sector by promoting sustainable building design, construction and operation. Through innovative financing and policy support, PEEB helps lower energy demand, reduce emissions, and unlock economic and environmental benefits for a climate-resilient future.
PEEB is currently funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), the French Ministry of Ecological Transition and Territorial Cohesion (MTECT), the Green Climate Fund (GCF), the European Union (EU), the Agence Française de Développement (AFD), the International Climate Initiative (IKI), and the Fonds Français pour l’Environnement Mondial (FFEM). The Partnership is part of the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC).
