Brian Bonaparte, Project Manager of the G-CREWS Project, recently addressed the Caribbean Sustainability Tourism Conference, shedding light on the critical role of water resource management in the tourism sector, particularly for islands like Grenada. His presentation underscored the responsibility of the tourism industry, especially hoteliers, in addressing the water availability crisis and outlined actionable steps for a more sustainable future.
The G-CREWS Project, a $45 million initiative funded by the Green Climate Fund, the Government of Germany, and the Government of Grenada, focuses on Climate-Resilient Water Sector improvements. Implemented by GIZ, NAWASA, the Grenada Development Bank, and the Government of Grenada, the project aims to enhance water supply services, especially during droughts and after extreme weather events.

The urgency of action is evident as Grenada's water demand already exceeds supply, a situation worsened by climate change-induced factors like rising temperatures and decreasing rainfall. The rapid expansion of the tourism industry, while economically beneficial, strains the water system further, highlighting the need for sustainable growth strategies that prioritize water resources management.
To promote water sustainability, hoteliers can adopt measures such as regular water audits, installation of water-efficient devices, and investment in alternative water sources like rainwater harvesting. To support these efforts, the G-CREWS project has launched the "Challenge Fund for Tourism," providing grants for up to 80% of the cost of rainwater harvesting systems and water-efficient devices.
The G-CREWS project stands as a model for sustainable water management in the Caribbean. Through collaboration with stakeholders and innovative solutions, it aims to ensure a resilient future for the tourism sector and the region as a whole.
