The platform Haiti Takes Roots (HTR) launched the Environmental Clubs Initiative in the department of Nippes, Haiti. Four schools have joined the initiative which resulted in the creation of four environmental clubs. The initiative generally planned to engage children at an early age in the pursuit of solutions to climate change, environment, and natural resources problems.
Specifically, the initiative pursued two main objectives: the creation and involvement of local schools in environmental clubs; the empowerment of local youth into environmental stewards who will act and sensitize local communities in environment protection and natural resources management, while developing an eco-responsibility spirit. The children learned and connected daily experiences to environmental concepts. They then passed the knowledge, lessons and ideas to their community and family.
Planting trees is one of the clubs’ fundamental actions. HTR worked closely with members of theAyiti Vèt Coalition and other partners to provide seedlings. The students plant the seeds and vegetation in the Bondeau-Paillant watershed and nearby degraded fields. This specific activity produces sedimentation downstream of the Bondeau mangrove. The project engaged in a fruitful collaboration with other NGOs, local partners, and environmental clubs which led to the donation of fruit trees by an international organisation, Trees that Feed Foundation.
These activities are integrated in the environmental mobilization component of the Ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) pilot project funded by the Caribbean Biodiversity Funds in Bondeau. > More information
