As part of the IKI-funded project “Mobilize Net-Zero – Facilitating the Global Transport Transformation,” a groundbreaking initiative is about to launch in Panama – one that will shape the future of Central America, the Caribbean, and Latin America as a whole.
The program, “E-Motion: E-Mobility and Low Carbon Transportation,” is backed by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and implemented in collaboration between GIZ (Executing Entity) and CAF (Accredited Entity). With a total budget of $231 million, the initiative supports both technical and financial cooperation efforts.
Its primary goal is to enable a large-scale transition to e-mobility in Latin America, focusing on fully electric commercial vehicles (e-buses and light commercial vehicles) and the necessary charging infrastructure. Implementation will take place across regional, national, and local levels, fostering sustainable electric mobility and promoting knowledge exchange across the region. The program's activities include workforce training, as well as the design and promotion of business models and sustainable financial products to drive e-mobility adoption in both the public and private sectors.
Panama's efforts will be complemented by similar initiatives in Paraguay and Uruguay, strengthening regional dialogue and collaboration. Additionally, a parallel program, developed by the Agence Française de Développement, or the French Development Agency (Accredited Entity), and GIZ (Executing Entity), is expected to launch during the second half of the year. This initiative will expand its impact to Mexico, Costa Rica, Colombia, Peru, Argentina, Brazil, and the Dominican Republic, further accelerating the transition to low-carbon transportation across Latin America.
This initiative marks a crucial step toward reducing transport emissions and establishing a sustainable mobility ecosystem for the region’s future.
