Coffee growers in Costa Rica have a digital tool that makes it easier for them to measure CO2 e emissions in coffee production and processing, as well as to identify concrete measures to reduce them and build resilience against the effects of the climate crisis.
The CRCAFE app was developed between 2018 and 2019 by the Costa Rican Coffee Institute(ICAFE), with support from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the GermanDevelopment Cooperation GIZ. The tool aims to allow producers to enter climate data from their farms and processing plants, in order to receive feedback from ICAFE and the Ministry of Agriculture to make their coffee activities more sustainable. In addition, it makes it easier for users to apply for financial incentives for investments in sustainable and low-emission technologies.
The use of the app increased with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in Costa Rica in March 2020, as field activities by extension officers from public institutions was affected by travel restrictions.
