Climate change threatens to undermine all efforts to conserve and sustainably manage biological diversity and nature itself offers some of the most effective solutions to avoid the effects of global warming.

The landmark Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), agreed at the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, aims to catalyze, facilitate and drive urgent and transformative action to address and reverse the trend of biodiversity loss with the participation of all of society. In this way, it is the instrument that will guide the actions and financing of countries over the next 30 years.

One of the key goals of the ACCION Clima project is to address measures to create capacities and social, political, legal or institutional conditions that reinforce long-term protection and sustainable use, and facilitate the establishment of agreements and priorities for a national agenda related to the fulfillment of national and global biodiversity targets.

Therefore, the project together with the Ministry of Environment and Energy, organized five workshops between October and November 2022, in order to review and provide feedback to the targets and indicators of the GBF for proper implementation in Costa Rica. Nearly 70 people participated in the activity and contributed their experience and knowledge.

In an additional session focused on target 23, which had been proposed by Costa Rica, a review of the post-2020 GBF Gender Action Plan was undertaken with representatives from the National System of Conservation Areas, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, GIZ and UNDP.
