The Regional Workshop promotes the exchange of knowledge between implementing organizations and partners of projects funded by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) in Central America and the Caribbean.

This space allows for strengthening the network of IKI projects, sharing experiences and solutions, as well as visualizing the impacts achieved by international cooperation in the region.

Option 1 | Integrated Approaches for Conservation and Marine and Coastal Value Chains

Objective: Showcase the progress of the TRANSFORMA-INNOVA project in wetland conservation in the Puntarenas estuary and the promotion of the blue economy value chain under the model of "from the hook to the plate".

Important: 

  • Please take into account that the walk through the mangrove forest requires moderate physical activity.
  • Due to rainy season, it is absolutely essential that participants bring gum boots/rain boots or waterproof shoes. We highly recommend bringing a change of shoes.
  • Don´t forget protection against the sun (sunscreen, hat) and rain (rain jacket, umbrella), mosquito repellent, comfortable clothes and a water bottle.

Arrival at Puntarenas Estuary and Associated Mangrove Swamps Wetland

  • Tour through the canals and mangrove wetlands
  • Exchange with community representatives from El Establo and Pitahaya, as well as the Central Pacific Conservation Area of the System for Conservation Areas (SINAC)
12:00 Transfer to Isla Cocos restaurant in Puntarenas

  • Introduction to the EcoGourmet model "From the Hook to the Plate" implemented by Isla Cocos restaurant

Option 2 | The circular route of the "green sheep" of Cartago
 

Objective: Provide a space to gather knowledge in the field and exchange with community leaders involved in the first pilot project for composting organic waste from three cantons of the Los Santos region as part of a public-private cooperation with coffee cooperative CoopeTarrazú, and visit of the start-up Smatter, which has innovated in the creation of biomaterials from the production of various fungi.

  • Tour along the greenhouse, composting plant, and farm affiliated with Coopetarrazú

Visit of the entrepreneurship Smatter S.A.

Guided tour of the SMATTER production plant to learn how these entrepreneurs develop biomaterials, incorporating industrial equipment created by themselves

18:00 Estimated arrival at the hotel and end of the road trip
